The Indiana Women’s Golf Association was formed in September of 1921 in Indianapolis at South Grove Golf Club. The association formed after a one day event arranged by Mrs. F. G. Maple, and Mrs. Harry D. Hammond was elected first president.
In June, 1922, women gathered at Lafayette Country Club for the first state tournament. The IWGA was financed by 14 initial member clubs whose dues provided the financial backing to continue the association’s efforts.
1938 saw the first girl’s state junior tournament held at Grandview Golf Club in Anderson, Indiana. Anderson Country Club, just minutes away, hosted the senior tournament that same year.
By 1940 there were 40 member clubs and entry fees were $3. Due to World War II, the junior tournament was cancelled in 1942 and the all IWGA events were suspended for 1943 and 1944. Tournaments resumed in 1945 and have continued ever since.
In 1995, the Indiana Golf Office began the day-to-day administrative functions of the Indiana Women’s Golf Association. The IWGA remains the governing body of women’s golf in Indiana. The primary function is still to offer tournament opportunities for the amateur women golfers in the state.
