IWGA Match Play Championship Two young women golfers of
very similar talent and ability battled for the 2007 IWGA Match Play
Championship title. In the end, third seeded Kristi Piepenbrink of Greenwood
defeated fourth seeded Lynnsey Showers of Kokomo in the final match at Rock
Hollow GC in Peru.
Piepenbrink, who attends
University of Indianapolis, faced Showers after defeating Lynnsey’s sister,
Lauren, in a semi-final earlier today. Lynnsey reached the finals after
defeating qualifying medalist Aimee Neff of Carmel.
Piepenbrink and Showers, who
played on the Indiana Pepsi Junior Tour at the same time, matched drives, putts
and wins through the first 11 holes, with the match standing at Piepenbrink up
one over Showers. On the twelfth hole Piepenbrink began to hone her irons shots
into the green and Showers began to feel the pressure, overshooting the
thirteenth green and finding the hazard on the fourteenth hole.
With Piepenbrink three up on
the fifteenth, the ladies again matched drives and second shots, often making
it difficult to determine who should play first. However, the highlight of the
day came for Piepenbrink when her third shot on the par five hit the cup on the
fly and came to rest inches for the hole. Showers, whose ball was resting on
the green was no closer than 20 feet, graciously conceded the hole and the
match to Peipenbrink, finishing 4 and 3.
Piepenbrink is in her fourth
year as a PE and business major, under the coaching of her father at U of I.
She red-shirted her first semester and gained status as Division II Freshman
Player of the Year her first playing season. Showers, a Pharmacy major, will be
in her fifth year at Butler after red-shirting the past season.
The IWGA Match Play Championship format is 18 holes
qualifying with the low 16 making the cut to match play. First and Second round matches were completed
June 5 with semi-final and final matches completed today. Complete results, and
